Everybody’s favorite reality television star Tim Gunn, part of Lifetime’s “Project Runway,” is a fiery Leo, but what his birth chart reveals is a wealth of water and air.
Possessing a staggering intellect, superlative diction, and a genuine sense of empathy, Tim became the breakout star of “Project Runway” nearly overnight. And it’s not difficult to see why.
Contrary to the majority of reality stars, Tim’s talents lie in his unwavering sincerity. Whether he’s consoling a contestant, offering straightforward advice, or wondering about the whereabouts of Andrae, the message is clear: Tim seriously cares.
But why is Tim the way he is? By looking at Tim’s birth chart (a snapshot of where all the planets were in the sky when he was born) we can get a sense of what unique qualities Tim was born with, and how he makes them work (did I seriously just write that?).
The Best Den Mother That is Not Technically a Mother
Water Signs: Mercury, Mars and Uranus in Cancer, and Moon in Pisces
The first thing that immediately stands out when looking at the planets’ location in Tim’s chart is his Mercury. This planet rules communication, and in Tim’s case is in the sign of Cancer. Cancer is a water sign, which means it’s very emotional and that it can pick up on the emotions of others. Cancer is normally very protective, nurturing, sensitive and affectionate.

It’s no mistake that Cancer is also the sign of the mother. As a result of this, Tim’s natural style is to mother the people that he comes into contact with. We see this borne out in his life time and again. In fact, when people say to him, “Tim, don’t you wish you had kids?” he replies, “Well, I’ve got over 500 of them at Parsons!” and then laughs his pleasant chuckle.
Continuing with the water theme, Tim’s Moon is in Pisces. The Moon rules the feelings, moods, and unconscious. Pisces is a sign associated with empathy, extreme sensitivity, inspiration, creativity, and gentleness. This Moon is obviously influencing much of Tim’s empathy, but in his life it appears to have had a very strong, and, some might say, negative impact on him.
In interviews Tim is often asked about his dating life, which has been surprisingly nonexistent for the last twenty odd years. It turns out that Tim was in a relationship for six years when his boyfriend unexpectedly broke up with him. Tim described it in detail in an interview with instinct magazine:
…The biggest blow was the complete erosion of my relationship. It was abrupt. It was like a surgical strike. I still have a big raw spot on me from it, and that was 24 years ago. We were watching television in bed, and he just turned to me and said, ‘I don’t have the patience for you anymore.’ I said, ‘What do you mean? Do you mean you want me to leave?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ That night, I got all my stuff together and left. …I’ve never been in a relationship since and I never will be. It was so devastating that I can’t possibly conceive of being more emotionally hurt and scarred than I was by that.
To be honest, I’m somewhat saddened by the fact that Tim has completely walled off this part of his life, and is either unwilling or unable to enter into a romantic relationship again. He’s such a caring, thoughtful person that clearly has a lot to give, but in looking at his planets it does make sense.
NPH knows what time it is
In addition to Mercury in Cancer and his Moon in Pisces, Mars and Uranus are also in Cancer. Mars is the planet that allows a person to take action, whether it be in matters dealing with sex, love, or business. Uranus in turn, is considered to be the great awakener, and helps to break people out of stuck patterns. Uranus stays in a sign for seven years, a phenomenon that society has picked up on and deemed “the seven-year itch.”
Looking at these planets we see that Tim has a great deal of water in his chart. As a result, Tim is a very emotional person, capable of profoundly deep feeling. And, sadly in this case, it seems Tim’s feelings were so strong during the break-up that he doesn’t want to revisit them again.
Why You Shouldn’t Anger a Vlogging Leo
Fire Signs: Sun and Pluto in Leo
And then we have Tim’s fire signs. Leos are fiery, dynamic, noble, charismatic and often impeccably groomed. They enjoy the spotlight and are pleased when people see the powerful display they put on.
The most powerful graffiti display I saw while living in New York
Pluto is the planet of personal power and transformation. In reading Tim’s guide on style, he discusses always dressing properly for every occasion, which is his way of asserting power in a Leo fashion.
The Sun is the planet that has the most influence in our lives. Because of this, when people ask what sign you are, they’re actually asking what your Sun sign is. The Sun rules over our ego, consciousness, and individuality. Tim is definitely a fiery Leo, unafraid to say what needs to be said, but the criticism is always tempered by his deep feeling. As a result, most people are thankful to hear his thoughts (Kenley excepted obviously).
One group who probably didn’t want to come under Tim’s leonine fire were the producers and judges of this season’s “Project Runway.” Tim’s adherence to transparency inspired him to post a weekly vlog on his facebook page listing sundry complaints about each episode, and allowing the viewer in on the behind-the-scenes shenanigans. He saved the full brunt of his battery for the judges, whom he accused of having imbibed crack cocaine on a habitual basis.

Why Tim Has a Better Vocabulary Than Virtually Everyone Else on Television
Air Signs: Venus and Jupiter in Gemini, and Saturn and Neptune in Libra
While Tim has four planets in water signs, he also has four in air. Air signs are associated with the intellect, and are fascinated with ideas, concepts and language. Frankly, for someone with such an exacting use of English, and who is a self described “nerdy nerd,” I would have been very surprised if Tim didn’t have a lot of air in his chart.
Tim would have been incredulous as well
Both his Saturn and Neptune are in Libra. Saturn is the planet of work, and rules over responsibility, structure, and maturity. Neptune deals with spirituality, dreams, and imagination. Libra is the sign of relationships, and is incredibly even-handed, thoughtful and wise. So Tim is able to achieve his dreams, indulge his imagination, and pursue his creativity when he is dealing with people in relationships. Looking at his life we can see that he shines brightest around others, whether they be students, designers, models, or anyone else that he happens to run across.
The sign of Gemini is that of the communicator. It offers up a wellspring of ideas and thoughts, and the ability to articulate them in an interesting fashion. Tim’s Venus and Jupiter are both in Gemini. Venus is associated with love, beauty, art, and creative endeavors. Jupiter is the planet of expansion, abundance, and generosity. When Tim activates his fabulous communication skills, he is able to use his creativity at the highest level and bring abundance into his life. I think having your own television show, multiple books, and a role as one of America’s most beloved reality show stars fits the bill.
Total: Four Water, Four Air and Two Fire
Tim’s abundance of water and air make for an incredibly empathetic and intelligent man, while the fire allows him to bring these gifts to a large audience. His lack of a love life troubles me, but I’m sure he will find a way to carry on.
